Bird feeders with walnut shells

Especially during the coldest months, birds often struggle to find food.

Using walnut shells and other small items, we can build small feeders to offer food to wild birds.

Here’s what you need:

  • Walnuts
  • String
  • Bird feed or various seeds (corn, sunflower, wheat, millet, oats…)
  • Peanut butter
  • Awl or drill with thin bit

Method:

Open the walnuts and empty them completely, trying not to break them.

Using the awl or drill with a very thin bit, pierce the shells at one end and insert a piece of string through the newly made hole.

Prepare the bird food, mixing the feed or seeds with a few tablespoons of peanut butter.

Take some of this mixture and place it in the walnut shells, pressing down a bit so as to compact the seeds and make them stick well.

Now you simply need to hang your small feeders and wait for a sparrow or two to come and visit you in your garden!
