How to store walnuts
Have you bought a quantity of walnuts with shells and don’t know how and where to store them?
Here you will find some indications to best preserve the taste and quality of the walnuts, to be able to enjoy them confidently even a year after harvesting!
Firstly, it is necessary to distinguish between fresh nuts and dried nuts: fresh nuts must usually be kept in the refrigerator and consumed within a short time from harvest, as having a high humidity can degrade quickly. It is a different case for already dried walnuts, on sale all year round, which, having a longer shelf life, can be consumed even one year after harvesting.
The essential difference between fresh walnuts and dried walnuts is the drying process, which is used to lower the moisture content of walnuts and allows them to be stored in the long term.
Dried nuts in shell should be stored simply in a cool and dry place, preferably in the dark, away from other foods that can transfer abnormal odours. In fact, they absorb odours easily. They can be stored in clean and dry paper, plastic or glass containers, taking care not to alter their aroma and integrity.
In general, walnuts remain good and fragrant when kept away from sources of heat, light and humidity, as the high temperatures associated with humidity can cause them to rot, change colour or make them soft.
Simply periodically check that the container in which they are stored is always closed and clean to avoid possible pests getting at them.
